# CeraVe AM Lotion SPF 30 vs Ultra-Light SPF 30

**Question answered:** Should I choose CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 or Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30?

**Short answer:** Choose AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 if your skin is normal to dry and you want niacinamide in your daytime moisturizer; it pairs 8% zinc oxide with chemical filters. Choose Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 if your skin is normal to oily and you want a matte finish; its filters are all chemical. Both are broad spectrum SPF 30 with ceramides.

## What this means for you

### Start with what you notice

Pick the morning moisturizer-with-sunscreen that matches how your skin looks by lunchtime: comfortable and a little dry, or shiny.

### The ingredient names, translated

Both are SPF 30 moisturizers, so they do two jobs in one step. Sunscreen filters are the ingredients that absorb or block UV. The AM lotion mixes zinc oxide, a mineral filter, with homosalate, octinoxate and octocrylene. Ultra-Light uses avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene, with a powdery polymer for a matte look.

### How to decide

- Normal to dry skin, or you like a little niacinamide? AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30.
- Normal to oily skin and you want less shine? Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30.
- Swimming or sweating heavily? Neither states water resistance, so use a water-resistant sunscreen.

### What to expect

Either protects only if you apply enough and reapply at least every two hours outdoors. A moisturizer with SPF won't stop all sun damage. We haven't tested either product.

## Filters and finish decide it

[CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30](product:cerave-am-facial-moisturizing-lotion-spf-30) lists homosalate 10%, octinoxate 5%, octocrylene 2% and zinc oxide 8%. The inactive list starts with water and [niacinamide](/ingredients/niacinamide/), then adds ceramides NP, AP and EOP and sodium hyaluronate. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin and calls it oil free.

[CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30](product:cerave-ultra-light-moisturizing-lotion-spf-30) lists avobenzone 3%, homosalate 10%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 2.7%. CeraVe positions it for normal to oily skin with a matte finish. Its inactive list includes methyl methacrylate crosspolymer, a powdery ingredient often used to soften shine, plus the same three ceramides.

> **Skin Realist check:** the best SPF is the one you'll actually put on every morning. If a texture annoys you, it'll live in a drawer.

## Label differences worth knowing

Only the AM lotion lists octinoxate. Both carry the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation for daily use, according to CeraVe. Neither states a water-resistance time.

## Which to choose

Consider CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 when: Your skin is normal to dry and you want niacinamide in the same step; You'd like some zinc oxide among the filters.

Consider CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 when: Your skin is normal to oily and you prefer a matte finish; You want an oil-free lotion with an all-chemical filter set.

## Questions

### Is either a mineral sunscreen?

No. The AM lotion includes 8% zinc oxide but also homosalate, octinoxate and octocrylene. Ultra-Light uses only chemical filters. For mineral-only options, see our sunscreen guide.

### Which has niacinamide?

The AM lotion lists niacinamide second on its ingredient list. Ultra-Light's recorded list doesn't include it.

### Are they fragrance free?

CeraVe says the AM lotion is free of added fragrance. The Ultra-Light page we checked doesn't make that claim, though no fragrance appears on its recorded list.
