# CeraVe Moisturizing Cream vs Intensive Cream

**Question answered:** Should I choose CeraVe Moisturizing Cream or CeraVe Intensive Moisturizing Cream?

**Short answer:** Choose Moisturizing Cream if your skin is normal to dry and you want the classic fragrance-free, NEA-accepted cream for face and body, including for kids 3 and up. Choose Intensive Moisturizing Cream if your skin is very dry, rough or tight and the classic cream isn't enough; it adds 5% Hydro-Urea and shea butter. Both list CeraVe's three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate.

## What this means for you

### Start with what you notice

If your current moisturizer feels fine for an hour and then your skin is tight or flaky again, you may need a richer formula. If it already keeps you comfortable, the classic cream is enough.

### The ingredient names, translated

Urea is a humectant: it pulls water into the top layer of skin and can soften rough, scaly patches. Shea butter is a rich emollient that smooths and softens. The classic Moisturizing Cream relies on petrolatum, which sits on top of skin to slow water loss.

### How to decide

- Normal to dry skin, or buying for a child? Moisturizing Cream.
- Very dry, rough or tight skin, especially legs and hands? Intensive Moisturizing Cream.
- Avoiding shea butter? Moisturizing Cream; the Intensive cream lists shea third.

### What to expect

Both help skin hold moisture, and results depend on applying them right after washing. Neither treats eczema or psoriasis; see a dermatologist for persistent rashes. We haven't tested either product.

## How rich you need it decides it

[CeraVe Moisturizing Cream](product:cerave-moisturizing-cream) lists water, glycerin, fatty alcohols, caprylic/capric triglyceride and petrolatum near the top, then ceramides NP, AP and EOP, dimethicone and sodium hyaluronate. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin and ages 3 and up, and it carries the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance.

[CeraVe Intensive Moisturizing Cream](product:cerave-intensive-moisturizing-cream) puts [shea butter](/ingredients/shea-butter/) third and hydroxyethyl urea fourth, part of what CeraVe calls 5% Hydro-Urea. It also lists the same three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate. CeraVe positions it for dry to very dry skin, including sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

> **Skin Realist check:** "intensive" isn't a level-up you have to earn. If the classic tub keeps you comfortable, you're done shopping.

## Label differences worth knowing

The Intensive cream's list is longer (35 ingredients vs 24) and includes isopropyl palmitate and myristyl myristate, which some acne-prone readers prefer to avoid on the face. CeraVe reports an 89-person, one-week leg study for the Intensive cream; the classic cream's page gives no study figures.
