# CeraVe SA Lotion vs Moisturizing Cream

**Question answered:** Should I choose CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin or CeraVe Moisturizing Cream?

**Short answer:** Choose SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin if your problem is texture: rough elbows, knees or bumpy upper arms. It adds salicylic acid and lactic acid to a ceramide lotion. Choose Moisturizing Cream if your skin is simply dry or itchy and you want a rich, acid-free cream for face and body. Many people use the SA lotion on rough patches and the cream everywhere else.

## What this means for you

### Start with what you notice

Run your hand over the area. If it feels rough or bumpy like sandpaper, that's a texture problem. If it just feels tight, flaky or itchy, that's dryness.

### The ingredient names, translated

The SA lotion contains salicylic acid and lactic acid (as ammonium lactate), which loosen built-up dead skin. The Moisturizing Cream has no exfoliating acid; it uses petrolatum, ceramides and glycerin to hold water in. Exfoliating and moisturizing are different jobs.

### How to decide

- Rough, bumpy patches on arms, legs, elbows or knees? SA Lotion, on those areas only.
- All-over dryness, itch, or dry patches on the face? Moisturizing Cream.
- Sensitive, cracked or freshly shaved skin? Skip the acid lotion on those areas.

### What to expect

Bumpy skin like keratosis pilaris can look smoother with regular use but tends to return when you stop. Acid lotions can sting broken skin and increase sun sensitivity. We haven't tested either product.

## Texture or dryness decides it

[CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin](product:cerave-sa-lotion-for-rough-bumpy-skin) lists [salicylic acid](/ingredients/salicylic-acid/) fifth and ammonium lactate, a form of [lactic acid](/ingredients/lactic-acid/), seventh. It also lists mineral oil, ceramides NP, AP and EOP, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. A dermatologist quoted by CeraVe mentions it for keratosis pilaris, the small bumps often on the upper arms.

[CeraVe Moisturizing Cream](product:cerave-moisturizing-cream) is the brand's thick tub cream for face and body. It lists petrolatum, dimethicone, the same three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate, with no exfoliating acid. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin and ages 3 and up, and it carries the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance.

> **Skin Realist check:** you can't moisturize your way out of sandpaper arms, and you shouldn't acid-peel your way out of dry skin. Match the tool to the job.

## Label differences worth knowing

SA Lotion lists methylparaben and propylparaben; the cream doesn't. Both are sold as free of added fragrance.
