# COSRX BHA Power Liquid vs CeraVe BHA Toner

**Question answered:** Should I choose COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid or CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner?

**Short answer:** Choose CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner if you want a declared 2% salicylic acid with ceramides and niacinamide, applied with a cotton pad; CeraVe lists it for all skin types. Choose COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid if you want a short ingredient list built on willow bark water and betaine salicylate, a gentler salicylic acid relative, with niacinamide. Both are sold as fragrance free and are leave-on exfoliants, so neither should be layered with other acids or a retinoid on the same night.

## What this means for you

### Start with what you notice

If you have blackheads, clogged pores or bumpy texture, a leave-on BHA is the usual next step after a gentle cleanser.

### The ingredient names, translated

BHA means beta hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid is the classic one: it's oil-soluble, so it can work inside pores. CeraVe's toner declares 2% salicylic acid. COSRX's liquid uses betaine salicylate, a salicylic acid derivative, without a stated percentage, alongside willow bark water, a plant source of salicylates.

### How to decide

- Want a declared salicylic acid strength and ceramides for comfort? CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner.
- Want a very short ingredient list with niacinamide? COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid.
- Already use a retinoid or another acid? Alternate nights, or choose one exfoliant.

### What to expect

Leave-on BHAs can make blackheads less noticeable over several weeks of regular use. Sebaceous filaments on the nose come back no matter what. Either can dry or irritate if overused. We haven't tested either product.

## Declared salicylic acid vs a betaine salicylate liquid

[CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner](product:cerave-bha-exfoliating-toner) is a liquid-gel toner for acne-prone skin that CeraVe says also suits oily, dry and sensitive skin. It declares 2% salicylic acid and also lists capryloyl salicylic acid, with niacinamide and ceramides NP, AP and EOP. CeraVe sells it as fragrance free and oil free, and says to swipe it on with a cotton pad after cleansing, starting once a day.

[COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid](product:cosrx-bha-blackhead-power-liquid) is a 100 mL leave-on liquid with just ten ingredients. Willow bark water leads the label, followed by butylene glycol, betaine salicylate and niacinamide. COSRX sells it as fragrance free, positions it for oil control and clearer-looking pores, and advises sensitive skin to introduce it gradually. COSRX's FAQ also advises against using it at the same time as other acids.

## Using a leave-on BHA without overdoing it

The [AAD warns](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-secrets/routine/safely-exfoliate-at-home) that over-exfoliating can cause redness and irritation, and that exfoliating while using retinoids may worsen dryness. Start every other day, moisturize afterward, and keep it on separate nights from a retinoid.

## Which to choose

Consider CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner when: You want a declared 2% salicylic acid toner with ceramides; You prefer swiping on with a cotton pad once a day.

Consider COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid when: You want a short, ten-ingredient formula with niacinamide; You'd rather use a salicylic acid derivative than salicylic acid itself.

## Questions

### Is betaine salicylate the same as salicylic acid?

No. Betaine salicylate is a salicylic acid derivative used in some K-beauty exfoliants. COSRX doesn't state its percentage, so its strength can't be compared directly with CeraVe's 2% salicylic acid.

### How often should I use a BHA toner?

CeraVe says to start its toner once a day and only increase to two or three times if needed. COSRX advises sensitive skin to introduce its liquid gradually.

### Can I use either with retinol?

Not on the same night when you're starting. Exfoliating acids and retinoids can both dry the skin. See our ingredient mixing guide.
