Shade guide

Find Your Foundation Shade

Match foundation and concealer shades by depth and undertone, using the shade ranges the brands publish on their own pages.

Every skin tone is described by two things: how light or deep it is (depth) and the colour it leans toward underneath (undertone). Get both right and a shade disappears into your skin. Get only depth right and it can still look ashy, pink or orange.

Depth

  • FairSkin that burns easily and rarely tans.
  • LightSkin that burns easily but can tan a little.
  • MediumSkin that tans easily and seldom burns.
  • TanSkin that tans deeply and rarely burns.
  • DeepSkin that is deep brown to very deep brown.

Undertone

  • CoolPink, red or bluish cast. Veins tend to look blue or purple.
  • WarmGolden, peachy or yellow cast. Veins tend to look green.
  • NeutralA mix of both. Veins look blue-green, and many shades suit you.
  • OliveA green-gold cast. Some brands label these shades "olive".

Shade names, codes and depth numbers come from each brand's own product page. We group depth numbers into the bands above ourselves. The colour dots are approximations sampled from the brands' product photos, so they vary with your screen and lighting: use them to narrow down, then check the brand's own swatches. We haven't tested these products.
