What it is
Aluminum hydroxide is an inorganic compound that occurs naturally as the mineral gibbsite and can also be manufactured for industrial and cosmetic applications. In makeup, color cosmetics, and sunscreens, it functions primarily as a supporting ingredient to coat pigments or mineral filters. This coating helps particles distribute evenly and look uniform on skin.
The name may remind you of antacids or antiperspirants, but ingredient names do not make those products interchangeable. Aluminum hydroxide is not metallic aluminum, and it is not a UV filter. In the United States, sunscreen protection comes from the sunscreen active ingredients listed for that purpose. Aluminum hydroxide does not add SPF by itself.
What it does
- Coats pigments. A surface coating can help pigments disperse and contribute to the way a color cosmetic applies.
- Supports mineral filters. It may be used to coat particles such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in some sunscreen formulas.
- Helps control texture. Depending on the product, it can contribute to a stable, consistent feel or appearance.
- Does not act as a sunscreen filter. Its presence on a label is not a substitute for the formula’s UV-filter actives or labeled SPF.
Who it suits
Most people will encounter aluminum hydroxide as a minor part of a makeup or sunscreen formula, not as a stand-alone skin-care ingredient. The name alone does not tell you that a product will be irritating or that it will provide special protection. If you are choosing sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum product with a labeled SPF and follow its directions, rather than judging it by the presence of aluminum hydroxide.
If you have a known sensitivity to a specific cosmetic, check the full ingredient list and consider the whole formula. People sometimes mix up aluminum hydroxide with other aluminum salts used in antiperspirants, but their function and context can differ. A dermatologist can help if you are trying to identify a recurring reaction or have a medical concern.
What to pair it with, and what not to
There is nothing to pair directly with aluminum hydroxide. It is built into products alongside pigments, mineral filters, or other formula ingredients. Use the finished cosmetic according to its label; for sun protection, rely on the labeled sunscreen directions, not on aluminum hydroxide as though it were an independent filter.
Skin Realist check: A label word can sound like the headline. Sometimes it is just doing the quiet work of holding the cast together.

Common questions
Is aluminum hydroxide a sunscreen ingredient?
It is not a UV filter and does not add SPF on its own. In a sunscreen or makeup formula, it may coat pigments or mineral filter particles, but the sunscreen's listed active ingredients provide its UV protection.
Does aluminum hydroxide in skincare mean antiperspirant?
No. Aluminum hydroxide is a distinct compound and may be used in cosmetics for formula or pigment functions. Antiperspirants can contain different aluminum salts for a different purpose.
Is aluminum hydroxide the same as aluminum metal?
No. Aluminum hydroxide is a compound made from aluminum, oxygen, and hydrogen. An ingredient name does not mean that a cosmetic contains aluminum metal.
Why is aluminum hydroxide in makeup?
It can help coat color pigments and support a product's texture or appearance. Those roles can help the formula behave as designed, rather than provide a direct skin-care benefit.
