What it is
Despite the similar-sounding name, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate is not a sulfate, but a synthetic anionic surfactant used to cleanse skin in rinse-off products. It helps water lift surface oil and dirt so they rinse away easily. Because it is ethoxylated, its industrial production involves processing that can leave trace 1,4-dioxane as an unintended byproduct.
Manufacturers can reduce 1,4-dioxane during processing, and the FDA reports that changes to manufacturing have lowered levels over time. New York State has set limits for 1,4-dioxane in cosmetics. This is a manufacturing-impurity issue, not a reason to assume that every product containing an ethoxylated ingredient contains a concerning amount.
What it does
- Cleanses. It helps water remove oil and soil from skin.
- Creates foam. It can contribute lather, although foam is not a reliable measure of cleansing strength or mildness.
- Supports cleanser texture. The surfactant blend helps determine how the product spreads and rinses.
Who it suits
Whether a cleanser feels gentle depends on the whole formula, not just one surfactant. Other ingredients, pH, how long you leave it on, how often you wash, and how thoroughly you rinse all matter. A cleanser that leaves your skin tight or uncomfortable may not be a good match, even if a particular surfactant is often used in milder blends.
If you have sensitive or easily irritated skin, choose a cleanser designed for your preferred use and introduce it without changing several products at once. Stop using a cleanser that causes persistent irritation. A dermatologist can help with repeated reactions or a skin condition.
What to pair it with, and what not to
This is a rinse-off cleanser ingredient, not an active that needs a partner. After cleansing, use a moisturizer that feels comfortable, such as one containing glycerin or ceramides. Avoid adding extra cleansing steps just to chase more foam.
Skin Realist check: A cleanser should leave you clean, not auditioning for a squeaky-clean sound effect. Rinsing comfortably is a reasonable standard.

Common questions
What does disodium laureth sulfosuccinate do?
It is an anionic surfactant used to cleanse by helping water lift away oil and soil. It can create foam, but foam level alone does not tell you how mild a cleanser is.
Is disodium laureth sulfosuccinate a sulfate?
No. It is a sulfosuccinate surfactant, not a sulfate such as sodium lauryl sulfate. The similar word endings do not make them the same ingredient.
Can it be drying?
Any cleanser can feel stripping depending on its surfactant blend, concentration, pH, contact time, and how often you use it. The ingredient name alone does not determine mildness.
What is 1,4-dioxane, and should I worry about it?
Ethoxylated ingredients can have 1,4-dioxane as an unintended manufacturing byproduct, which manufacturers can reduce through processing and quality controls. It is an impurity concern, not a reason to assume the finished cleanser contains a harmful amount; New York State sets limits for it in cosmetics.
