CeraVe Moisturizing Cream vs Daily Lotion
Should I choose CeraVe Moisturizing Cream or Daily Moisturizing Lotion?
Short answer
Choose Moisturizing Cream for very dry skin, winter, or rough spots like shins and hands; it's thicker and lists petrolatum. Choose Daily Moisturizing Lotion for everyday use, warm weather or larger areas; it's lighter and oil free. Both have CeraVe's three ceramides and hyaluronic acid, are free of added fragrance and carry the National Eczema Association seal.
What this means for you
Start with what you notice
If your skin feels tight and rough even after lotion, you may need a thicker cream. If cream feels heavy and sticky, a lotion is easier to use every day.
The ingredient names, translated
Both products use ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The cream adds petrolatum, an occlusive that forms a layer to slow water loss, which is why it feels richer. The lotion is lighter and oil free, so it spreads easily and absorbs fast. The AAD notes that creams and ointments are more effective than lotions for dry skin.
How to decide
- Very dry, flaky or itchy skin, or winter? Moisturizing Cream.
- Everyday use, warm weather, or you dislike a heavy feel? Daily Moisturizing Lotion.
- Both? Many people use the lotion all over and the cream on the driest spots.
What to expect
Either should leave skin softer within a few days of regular use, especially applied right after showering. Neither treats eczema or other skin conditions. We haven't tested either product.

Texture is the real difference
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the thick, tub-style cream. It has ceramides NP, AP and EOP, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and petrolatum, which CeraVe says forms a layer that locks in moisture. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin and ages 3 and up.
CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a light, oil-free lotion for face and body, with the same three ceramides and hyaluronic acid but no petrolatum on the recorded list. CeraVe claims 48-hour hydration without giving study details.
Both are free of added fragrance, non-comedogenic according to CeraVe, and carry the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance. The AAD notes that creams and ointments are more effective than lotions for dry skin, which is the main reason to choose the cream.
