CeraVe PM Lotion vs Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel

Should I choose CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion or Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel?

Short answer

Choose PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion if you want a light lotion for night, especially alongside a retinoid or acne treatment. Choose Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel if your skin is oily and you want a gel texture for both morning and night. Both are sold as fragrance free and oil free, and both list niacinamide, CeraVe's three ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Texture is the real difference.

What this means for you

Start with what you notice

If lotions feel slightly heavy or sticky on your oily skin, the gel is the lighter feel. If you mainly need a night moisturizer that's easy to tolerate, the lotion is made for that.

The ingredient names, translated

Both formulas share their key ingredients: niacinamide, which CeraVe says may help calm skin and reduce water loss, three ceramides to support the skin barrier, and hyaluronic acid to hold water. The lotion is an emulsion that feels like a light cream. The gel is lighter still, with silica, a powder that can help with shine.

How to decide

  • Using a retinoid or acne treatment at night? PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.
  • Oily skin and want one gel for mornings and nights? Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel.
  • Daytime? Neither has SPF, so add a sunscreen on top.

What to expect

Either should keep skin comfortable without a greasy feel. Neither will stop oil production or clear acne on its own. We haven't tested either product.

Same key ingredients, different texture

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is a lightweight night lotion for all skin types. Its label lists glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride and niacinamide near the top, followed by ceramides NP, AP and EOP, dimethicone and sodium hyaluronate. CeraVe sells it as fragrance free and oil free.

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel is a gel moisturizer for all skin types, including sensitive, used morning and night. Niacinamide is third on its list, after water and glycerin, and it adds silica alongside the same three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate. CeraVe sells it as fragrance free, oil free and paraben free.

Which suits your routine?

On retinoid or acne-treatment nights, a moisturizer that’s light but not too light helps you keep using the treatment; the AAD notes dryness and peeling are common side effects. That’s the PM lotion’s job. If you’re oily and want a single moisturizer that disappears under sunscreen, the gel suits that better.

Common questions

Can I use CeraVe PM lotion in the morning?

You can, with sunscreen on top. CeraVe designs it as a night moisturizer and sells AM versions with SPF.

Is Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel good for acne-prone skin?

CeraVe sells it as fragrance free and oil free for all skin types, including sensitive. That makes it a reasonable fit, but no moisturizer guarantees no breakouts.

Do both have niacinamide?

Yes. Both list niacinamide, ceramides NP, AP and EOP, and sodium hyaluronate.
