ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream vs Ultra-Rich

Should I choose ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream or Marine Cream Ultra-Rich?

Short answer

Choose Pro-Collagen Marine Cream if you want a lightweight gel-cream for the morning; ELEMIS recommends it for all skin types. Choose Marine Cream Ultra-Rich if your skin is dry or dehydrated and you want a richer, cushiony cream for morning and evening; it adds jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil unsaponifiables and cocoa seed butter. Both share padina pavonica and chlorella, and both list fragrance (parfum) and fragrance allergens, so neither suits fragrance avoidance.

What this means for you

Start with what you notice

If a moisturizer feels heavy or greasy on you, the original is the lighter one. If your skin still feels tight an hour after moisturizing, the Ultra-Rich is the one to look at.

The ingredient names, translated

Both are built on the same marine algae extracts, padina pavonica and chlorella, which ELEMIS positions for hydration and firmer-looking skin. The difference is the base: the Ultra-Rich adds plant oils and cocoa seed butter near the top of its list, which is what makes it richer. Both are fragranced.

How to decide

  • Oily, combination or normal skin, or you want it under makeup? Pro-Collagen Marine Cream.
  • Dry or dehydrated skin, or winter? Marine Cream Ultra-Rich.
  • Avoiding fragrance? Neither; both list parfum and allergens such as linalool and limonene.

What to expect

ELEMIS's claims about firmness and lines are the brand's own and don't come with study details on these product records. Expect a difference in texture and comfort between the two more than a difference in results. We haven't tested either product.

The same marine actives in two textures

ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is a day cream with a lightweight gel-cream texture and a silky-satin finish. ELEMIS recommends it for all skin types and directs a pea-sized amount every morning. Its key ingredients are three algae: padina pavonica, chlorella vulgaris and porphyridium cruentum. ELEMIS lists several sizes, from 15 mL to 100 mL.

ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich is the richer version for dry, dehydrated skin. ELEMIS describes a velvety, cushiony cream for morning and evening. Jojoba seed oil and sunflower seed oil unsaponifiables appear in the first five ingredients, and cocoa seed butter appears later, which is where the extra richness comes from. It shares padina pavonica, chlorella and ginkgo biloba with the original, and ELEMIS adds collagen amino acids to its key ingredients.

What both labels share

Both list fragrance (parfum), along with linalool, citronellol, limonene and geraniol; the Ultra-Rich also lists hydroxycitronellal. The FDA notes some fragrance ingredients can cause reactions in some people, so neither is a pick if you avoid fragrance. Both also list wheat germ oil and carrot root extract.

Firmness and line-smoothing claims for both come from ELEMIS. For fragrance-free alternatives, see our moisturizer guide.

Common questions

Is Marine Cream Ultra-Rich good for oily skin?

ELEMIS lists it for dry skin. Its label adds jojoba oil and cocoa seed butter, so oily skin will usually find the original lighter.

Are ELEMIS Marine Creams fragrance free?

No. Both list fragrance (parfum) plus linalool, citronellol, limonene and geraniol. The Ultra-Rich also lists hydroxycitronellal.

Do they contain collagen?

The Pro-Collagen name refers to ELEMIS's marine algae complex. The Ultra-Rich lists collagen amino acids among its key ingredients; the original's key ingredients are its algae extracts.
