What it is

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant found naturally in some plant materials. In skincare, it is most often discussed as part of antioxidant formulas, especially products that also contain vitamin C and sometimes vitamin E. The word acid can sound like a warning label, but ferulic acid is not used as a skin exfoliant in the way glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid is.

It can be challenging to compare formulas by ingredient name alone. Packaging, stability, concentration, and the rest of a formula all influence the product. A label listing ferulic acid is not a guarantee of a particular visible result.

What it does

  • Provides antioxidant support in a formula. Antioxidants are used to help protect the skin’s appearance from oxidative stress associated with everyday environmental exposure.
  • Often accompanies vitamin C. Ferulic acid is frequently formulated with vitamin C and vitamin E, rather than used as a standalone star.
  • Can complement a daytime routine. An antioxidant product can be an optional step before moisturizer and sunscreen. It does not replace sunscreen.

Who it suits

You may be interested in ferulic acid if you want an antioxidant serum or already use a vitamin C product that includes it. It can suit many routine types, but the formula may also contain ingredients that affect comfort, such as a low-pH vitamin C form or fragrance. If you are sensitive to a product, do not assume the ingredient name tells the whole story. Patch-test first and introduce one new formula at a time.

There is no requirement to buy a separate ferulic acid product. If an antioxidant serum is already part of your routine and feels comfortable, you can stick with it. For persistent skin concerns, a dermatologist can help you choose options grounded in your needs rather than a marketing promise.

What to pair it with, and what not to

Ferulic acid is commonly paired with vitamin C and vitamin E. It can also be used alongside moisturizer and daily sunscreen. There is no general need to separate it from niacinamide, though sensitive skin may prefer a simpler routine. Do not assume ferulic acid itself exfoliates or that an antioxidant product can replace sun protection. Apply sunscreen as directed.

Skin Realist check: An antioxidant supporting cast can be useful, but your routine does not need a chemistry degree or a standing ovation.

Common questions

What does ferulic acid do in skincare?

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant used in skincare formulas, often alongside vitamins C and E. Antioxidants are included to help limit oxidative stress on the skin's appearance.

Can you use ferulic acid with vitamin C?

Yes. Ferulic acid is commonly combined with vitamin C, and some formulas also include vitamin E. If you use separate products, introduce them gradually and follow label directions.

Is ferulic acid an exfoliant?

No. Despite the word acid in its name, ferulic acid is not used as an exfoliating acid like glycolic or lactic acid. In skincare it is mainly used for antioxidant properties.

Can ferulic acid irritate skin?

Ferulic acid is generally considered a well-tolerated cosmetic ingredient, but reactions can happen and other formula ingredients may be irritating. Patch-test a new product, especially if your skin is sensitive.
