CeraVe vs Laneige Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Should I choose CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum or Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Serum?
Short answer
Choose CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum if you avoid fragrance or have normal to dry skin; it pairs hyaluronic acid with vitamin B5 and CeraVe's three ceramides. Choose Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Serum if you want a cushiony, water-rich serum with squalane and beta-glucan and don't mind fragrance, which it lists. Both are hydrating serums for under moisturizer; neither is an active treatment.
What this means for you
Start with what you notice
If your skin feels tight or looks dull and dehydrated, a hyaluronic acid serum under your moisturizer is an easy extra layer of hydration.
The ingredient names, translated
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it holds water in the skin's surface layers. It works best on damp skin with a moisturizer on top to keep that water in. CeraVe's serum adds ceramides and panthenol (vitamin B5). Laneige's adds squalane, an oil-like emollient, and beta-glucan, and lists fragrance.
How to decide
- Avoiding fragrance? CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum.
- Want a cushiony, richer-feeling serum and like a light scent? Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Serum.
- Your moisturizer already feels like enough? You may not need either.
What to expect
Either should make skin feel more hydrated and comfortable, especially under a moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid serums don't treat dryness from eczema or other conditions. We haven't tested either product.

Two hydrating serums with different extras
CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a water-binding serum for normal to dry skin. Its label lists sodium hyaluronate, panthenol (vitamin B5) and ceramides NP, AP and EOP, with dimethicone for slip. CeraVe sells it as free of added fragrance and parabens, and directs it morning or night, alone or under moisturizer. It also lists isopropyl myristate, an emollient some acne-prone people choose to avoid.
Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Serum is built around what Laneige calls Blue Hyaluronic Acid, with squalane high on the list, beta-glucan and lactobacillus ferment lysate. Laneige describes a lightweight, cushiony texture for use morning and evening after cleansing and toning. The label lists fragrance (parfum).
How to use a hyaluronic acid serum
Apply it after cleansing (and after any treatment), on skin that’s still slightly damp, then follow with moisturizer. The AAD’s dry skin tips stress moisturizing right after washing, while skin is damp, to trap water in. Our hyaluronic acid guide covers the “can it dry you out?” question, and the routine order guide shows where a serum fits.

Common questions
Do I apply hyaluronic acid serum to damp or dry skin?
Damp skin is the usual advice, followed by moisturizer to seal it in. Our hyaluronic acid guide explains why.
Is the Laneige serum fragrance free?
No. Its ingredient list includes fragrance (parfum).
Can I use either serum with retinol or vitamin C?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator, not an exfoliating active, so it pairs with almost anything. Apply it after treatments and before moisturizer.
