- Why it is in the formula
- Pullulan forms a light film that can change how a serum, mask, or makeup product dries and wears.
What it is
Produced by fermentation using the microorganism Aureobasidium pullulans, pullulan is a water-soluble polysaccharide. This long-chain carbohydrate polymer can form a thin, flexible film as a cosmetic formula dries down. In serums, sheet masks, and makeup, that light film changes how the product sits, spreads, and feels on the skin.
The film-forming effect is cosmetic and temporary. A product can feel a little tighter as the film sets, but that sensation is not the same as a lasting change to skin structure. Other topical research does not prove that an ordinary cosmetic will create a medical or long-term effect. Its feel depends on the complete formula.
What it does
- Forms a light film. Pullulan can leave a flexible layer as a product dries, influencing surface feel and wear.
- Helps products adhere. Film formation can help a formula remain evenly distributed on the skin.
- Changes texture. It can give a serum or mask a smoother, tighter-feeling finish.
Who it suits
Pullulan may suit you if you like products that dry down with a slight film or temporarily tightened feel. If you dislike residue or any pulling sensation, you may prefer a product without film-forming polymers. The final effect depends on the formula, not on pullulan alone. It is not a required ingredient for any particular skin type.
Do not interpret pullulan as a treatment for skin damage because laboratory, animal, and wound-material research is not equivalent to testing a cosmetic moisturizer. If the product includes other actives or fragrance, those ingredients may matter more to your experience. Use the product as directed and stop if it causes persistent irritation. For medical skin concerns, ask a dermatologist.
What to pair it with, and what not to
Pullulan does not need a specific active alongside it. A moisturizer or serum may pair it with humectants and emollients to balance the surface feel. Choose a formula whose dry-down you like instead of stacking products to amplify the film.
Skin Realist check: A temporary tightening feel is a texture effect, not a new face. Enjoy it if you like it and move on.

Common questions
What does pullulan do in skincare?
Pullulan is a polysaccharide that can form a thin film as a product dries. That film can affect the way a formula feels or wears on the skin.
Where does pullulan come from?
It is typically produced by fermentation using a microorganism. The resulting material is a carbohydrate polymer rather than a plant oil or synthetic plastic bead.
Does pullulan tighten skin?
A pullulan film may create a temporary tightening sensation as it dries. That surface effect is not a lasting change to skin structure, and products vary.
Is pullulan a humectant?
Its best-known cosmetic role is film forming. It can be part of a hydrating formula, but the label alone does not make it the main water-binding ingredient.
