What it is
Aloe vera is a succulent plant whose leaf-derived ingredients are common in cosmetics. On ingredient labels, you may see Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract or another aloe name. Juice and extract refer to different preparations, and the concentration and processing can differ between products.
Aloe appears in gels, lotions, moisturizers, cleansers and after-sun products. As with other botanical ingredients, the amount and type of extract vary a lot between products, so effects vary. A gel that feels cooling may also rely on water, humectants, thickeners or other ingredients. The familiar plant name does not tell you how the complete product will feel.
What it does
- Conditions skin. Aloe-derived ingredients are used in cosmetics to condition skin and support a comfortable feel.
- Adds a light, watery texture in some formulas. Aloe is often found in gels and lotions, but the rest of the formula determines whether a product feels light or rich.
- Can feel refreshing. A cooling sensation may come from the product’s texture or how it is stored, and it should not be mistaken for treatment of a burn or other condition.
Who it suits
Aloe-containing products are available for many skin types, especially if you like gels or lightweight lotions. But aloe is not automatically a better choice than a basic moisturizer, and the product may include other ingredients that affect comfort. Check the full label rather than deciding from the front of the bottle alone.
If your skin reacts easily, patch-test the finished product and consider fragrance and other extracts in the formula. Stop using it if you notice persistent irritation. For a skin concern that is painful, worsening or not improving, ask a dermatologist rather than relying on an aloe cosmetic.
What to pair it with, and what not to
Aloe can be used with glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides as part of a moisturizing routine. If an aloe gel does not leave your skin comfortable, apply a moisturizer over it instead of adding several more watery layers. Use sunscreen as directed when you are outdoors; aloe does not replace sun protection.
Skin Realist check: A cool gel can feel like a little luxury, but a pleasant texture is not a reason to skip the rest of your routine.

Common questions
What is aloe vera in skincare?
Aloe vera skincare ingredients generally come from Aloe barbadensis, a succulent plant. Labels may list aloe leaf juice or leaf extract, which are different preparations. A product called aloe gel can also contain many other ingredients.
What does aloe vera do for skin?
Aloe-derived ingredients are used to condition skin and contribute to a cooling or hydrating feel in some formulas. The experience depends on the ingredient preparation and the full product. Aloe is not a substitute for sunscreen or care for a skin condition.
Is aloe vera good for sensitive skin?
Aloe appears in products marketed for sensitive skin, but it is not guaranteed to suit everyone. Check the full label for fragrance, alcohol and other ingredients, and patch-test a new product if your skin is easily irritated.
Can you use aloe vera every day?
Many aloe-containing cosmetics are designed for regular use, but follow the directions on the product you have. If it causes persistent stinging, redness or itching, stop using it. The other ingredients in the formula also affect how it feels on skin.
