CeraVe Hydrating Toner vs BHA Toner
Should I choose CeraVe Hydrating Toner or CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner?
Short answer
Choose Hydrating Toner if your skin is normal to dry or sensitive and you want a non-astringent, acid-free toner to add hydration after cleansing. Choose BHA Exfoliating Toner if you have acne-prone skin, clogged pores or rough texture and want 2% salicylic acid as a leave-on step. Both list ceramides and niacinamide and are sold as fragrance free.
What this means for you
Start with what you notice
Decide whether you want a toner that only adds comfort, or one that treats clogged pores and texture. They look alike in the bottle but do different jobs.
The ingredient names, translated
The Hydrating Toner is mostly water and humectants such as glycerin and propanediol, with ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. The BHA toner adds 2% salicylic acid, an oil-soluble exfoliant that works inside pores. Because it stays on your skin, it's stronger than an acid in a rinse-off wash.
How to decide
- Tight, dry or sensitive after cleansing? Hydrating Toner.
- Blackheads, clogged pores or acne-prone skin? BHA Exfoliating Toner, starting once a day.
- Already using a retinoid or another acid? Choose the Hydrating Toner, or alternate nights.
What to expect
A hydrating toner is an optional comfort step. A BHA toner can make clogged pores less noticeable over weeks, but can dry or irritate if overused. We haven't tested either product.

Hydrate or exfoliate decides it
CeraVe Hydrating Toner is a non-astringent toner for normal to dry skin, including sensitive. Its list starts with water, propanediol, glycerin and butylene glycol, then ceramides NP, AP and EOP, niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate. It has no exfoliating acid.
CeraVe BHA Exfoliating Toner states 2% salicylic acid as its active. Its inactive list includes the same three ceramides, niacinamide and capryloyl salicylic acid. CeraVe positions it for acne-prone skin and says it also suits oily, dry and sensitive skin.
Skin Realist check: “toner” is one word doing two very different jobs. Read the active line before you swipe it on twice a day.
Label differences worth knowing
CeraVe says to start the BHA toner once a day and only go up to two or three times if needed. It reports a consumer study of 86 people for the BHA toner; the Hydrating Toner’s page makes no study claims. Common questions
Can I use both toners?
You can, but not usually in the same routine when you're starting. A common approach is the BHA toner at night and the Hydrating Toner in the morning, cutting back if skin gets dry.
Is the Hydrating Toner alcohol free?
CeraVe sells it as alcohol free, astringent free, oil free and fragrance free, and no drying alcohol appears on the recorded list.
Why isn't salicylic acid on the BHA toner's ingredient list?
CeraVe states salicylic acid 2% as the active ingredient. Our recorded list is the inactive ingredients, which include capryloyl salicylic acid.
