CeraVe Hydrating vs Renewing SA Cleanser

Should I choose CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser or Renewing SA Cleanser?

Short answer

Choose Hydrating Facial Cleanser if your skin is normal to dry, sensitive or already using a retinoid or acid; it's a cream wash with no exfoliant. Choose Renewing SA Cleanser if your skin feels rough or bumpy, or you're prone to clogged pores, and you want salicylic acid in your wash. Both list CeraVe's three ceramides and hyaluronic acid and are sold as fragrance free.

What this means for you

Start with what you notice

Decide whether your face wash should simply clean, or also exfoliate. Rough texture and clogged pores point one way; tightness and flaking point the other.

The ingredient names, translated

Salicylic acid is an exfoliant that can loosen dead skin and work inside pores. In a wash it's only on your skin for a minute before you rinse it off. The Hydrating cleanser has no exfoliant; it relies on mild cleansing plus ceramides and glycerin to leave skin comfortable.

How to decide

  • Tight, flaky or easily irritated after washing? Hydrating Facial Cleanser.
  • Rough, bumpy texture or frequent clogged pores? Renewing SA Cleanser.
  • Already using a retinoid or a leave-on acid? Keep the wash simple with Hydrating, or alternate.

What to expect

A salicylic acid wash can help skin feel smoother over time, but contact time is short, so it's a gentle step rather than a full acne treatment. Either can sting freshly shaved or broken skin. We haven't tested either product.

Exfoliating or not is the real choice

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a cream cleanser for normal to dry skin. Its label leads with water, glycerin and fatty alcohols, then ceramides NP, AP and EOP, and sodium hyaluronate. It has no exfoliating acid and carries the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser adds salicylic acid and lists niacinamide high on the label, plus the same three ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. CeraVe positions it for normal and acne-prone skin, face and body, and says it exfoliates without microbeads.

Skin Realist check: a cleanser lives on your face for about as long as a TV ad break. If it’s your only acne step, manage expectations.

Label differences worth knowing

Renewing SA lists gluconolactone and corn oil; the Hydrating cleanser lists neither. Salicylic acid can sting freshly shaved or irritated skin, so on those days the Hydrating wash is the calmer pick. Common questions

Does Renewing SA Cleanser state its salicylic acid percentage?

No. CeraVe lists salicylic acid but doesn't give a percentage for this cleanser.

Can I use both?

Yes. Some people use the SA cleanser on oily areas or the body and the Hydrating cleanser on days their face feels dry. Avoid stacking the SA wash with other acids if your skin gets irritated.

Are they fragrance free?

CeraVe says the Hydrating cleanser is free of added fragrance and sells Renewing SA as fragrance free. No fragrance appears on either recorded list.
