What this means for you

Start with what you notice

If your aftershave burns, or your face feels tight an hour after shaving, you probably need a moisturizer more than a splash.

The ingredient names, translated

Shaving scrapes the surface of your skin. A moisturizer applied while skin is still damp helps hold water in and makes it feel comfortable. Many traditional aftershaves are mostly scent and alcohol, so they smell fresh and feel cool, but alcohol can dry skin and fragrance can irritate it. A sting is not a sign that the product is working.

How to decide

  • Want the splash feeling without the burn? Use an alcohol-free toner or mist, then a moisturizer.
  • Skin tight or flaky after shaving? Skip the splash and go straight to a moisturizer on damp skin.
  • Fine with scent and never get irritated? A fragranced post-shave balm is a matter of taste, so choose the scent you enjoy.
  • Get bumps rather than sting? Moisturizer won't fix ingrown hairs; change your shaving technique first.

What to expect

A good post-shave step makes skin feel calmer and less tight. It won't prevent razor bumps on its own. We haven't tested these products; facts come from each brand's label.

General guidance, not a test of these products: AAD: skin care tips for men (moisturize after shaving, fragrance can irritate); AAD: razor bump remedies (stop an aftershave that burns or stings); FDA: fragrances in cosmetics (labeling and sensitivities). Each product's label source is linked on its product page.

Our label-based picks

Each pick is matched to a need using what the brand's label says. We haven't tested these, so they aren't winners or guarantees of suitability.

Aftershave or Moisturizer After Shaving?

For most men, a moisturizer is the better post-shave step. Shaving leaves your skin’s surface a little roughed up, and the AAD recommends applying moisturizer right after shaving, while skin is still damp, to help trap water. A traditional aftershave splash is optional. If it burns or stings, the AAD’s razor bump advice is simple: stop using it.

That doesn’t mean you have to give up the ritual. If you like the cool splash, there are alcohol-free toners and mists that give you that step without the sting. Below are both options, plus moisturizers with and without fragrance, so you can choose based on how your skin reacts.

Why does aftershave sting?

Many traditional aftershave splashes are built on alcohol and fragrance. The alcohol gives that instant cool, tight feeling, and the fragrance is the reason you bought it. On freshly shaved skin, though, both can sting. The AAD notes that fragrance can irritate and dry the skin.

Labels can make this confusing. According to the FDA, a product can group a complex mix of scent ingredients under the single word “fragrance,” and an “unscented” product can still contain fragrance used to mask other smells. “Fragrance free” is the term to look for if you’re avoiding it. Then check the list for fragrance or parfum, denatured alcohol and essential oils.

Skin Realist check: That slap-and-wince move from the movies is a great scene and a bad routine. Burning is not the same as clean.

Option 1: An alcohol-free splash, then moisturizer

If you like a splash step, use an alcohol-free toner or mist right after you rinse and pat dry, then follow with moisturizer. These add a water-based layer, but they don’t replace moisturizer.

COSRX Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner

COSRX Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner is a 150 mL spray toner with just nine ingredients. COSRX highlights centella asiatica leaf water at 10% and says it helps soothe irritated skin. Panthenol and allantoin are also on the label. It’s sold as fragrance free, and the label lists no fragrance, essential oils or exfoliating acids.

Spray it on or press it in with your hands after you rinse. The trade-off is that it won’t smell like anything, which is the point.

Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist

Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist is a 6 fl oz spray that Dermalogica recommends for all skin types, with a focus on dryness, sensitivity and redness. It has twelve ingredients, including oat kernel extract, aloe leaf juice, bisabolol and ginger root extract. No fragrance or essential oils appear on the recorded list, though Dermalogica doesn’t market it as fragrance free.

Dermalogica says to use it after cleansing, and it works the same way after shaving. It’s a good fit if your skin turns red easily.

Option 2: Fragrance-free post-shave moisturizers

This is the step that matters most. Apply moisturizer within a minute or two of shaving, while your skin is still slightly damp.

For oily or normal skin: COSRX Hydrium Green Tea Aqua Soothing Gel Cream

COSRX Hydrium Green Tea Aqua Soothing Gel Cream is a 50 mL gel moisturizer that COSRX describes as cooling, non-oily and quick to absorb. The label lists green tea extract third, along with panthenol (COSRX highlights 5,000 ppm), allantoin and aloe. It’s sold as fragrance free, with no fragrance, essential oils or exfoliating acids on the label.

The cooling gel texture is the closest thing to a fragrance-free aftershave feel. If your skin is dry, it may not feel like enough on its own.

For sensitive or dry skin: Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Clean Correction Barrier Repair Nourishing Moisturizer

Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Clean Correction Barrier Repair Nourishing Moisturizer is a 2 oz (59 mL) moisturizer that Perricone MD describes as ideal for sensitive skin. It features peptides, ceramides and chaga mushroom extract, and the label also lists oat kernel extract and bisabolol. Perricone MD sells it as fragrance free.

Massage it onto your face and neck morning and evening. It’s a creamier option than a gel, which makes it a good match for skin that feels tight after shaving.

Option 3: Fragranced post-shave moisturizers

If scented products have never bothered you and you like your face to smell of something, these are made for men who shave. Just go in knowing they contain fragrance.

Elemis Daily Moisture Boost

Elemis Daily Moisture Boost is a 50 mL lightweight lotion that Elemis designs for use after shaving or cleansing. The brand lists it for combination, dry, normal and oily skin and highlights Polynesian green tamanu oil, chestnut extract and cactus flower extract. Squalane and shea butter are high on the list. Apply a pea-sized amount to your face and neck.

The caveat is scent. The label lists fragrance plus several essential oils, including bitter orange peel, geranium, coriander and lavender oils. If your skin reacts to fragrance, choose a fragrance-free option above.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream for Men

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream for Men is a 30 mL moisturizer that Elemis formulates for men and lists for combination, dry, normal and oily skin. It highlights Padina pavonica (a brown seaweed), ginkgo biloba and wheat germ oil. Elemis reports a 36-person clinical trial for the look of fine lines, so this is the pick if you want a post-shave step that’s also positioned for aging.

It lists fragrance and linalool, so the same caveat applies. It’s also a small jar for daily use.

Your post-shave routine

  1. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water and pat dry gently.
  2. Optional: spray or press in an alcohol-free toner or mist.
  3. Apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.
  4. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

Skin Realist check: If you want to smell good, that’s what cologne is for. Spray it on your clothes or chest, not on freshly shaved skin.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating sting as proof it works. It isn’t. Stop any product that burns.
  • Trusting “unscented” or “for sensitive skin” alone. Read the ingredient list for fragrance and alcohol.
  • Skipping moisturizer because you used a toner. The toner adds water; the moisturizer helps keep it in.
  • Using moisturizer to fix razor bumps. Bumps are ingrown hairs. See our razor bumps guide for technique changes.

Post-shave picks from men’s and drugstore brands

These are easier to find in a drugstore or a men’s grooming aisle. Only the two CeraVe products are sold as fragrance free.

Alcohol-free splash step: CeraVe Hydrating Toner

CeraVe Hydrating Toner is a non-astringent toner for normal to dry and sensitive skin, with ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. CeraVe sells it as alcohol free and fragrance free. Wipe it on with a cotton pad after you rinse, then moisturize.

Light fragrance-free moisturizer: CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel is an oil-free gel for all skin types, including sensitive, with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. CeraVe sells it as fragrance free. It has no SPF, so in the morning follow it with sunscreen.

A balm made for razor burn: Lab Series Grooming Calming Razor Burn Balm

Lab Series Grooming Calming Razor Burn Balm is a 3.4 fl oz (100 mL) balm with oat kernel extract, aloe, bisabolol, caffeine and sodium hyaluronate. No denatured alcohol is listed. Lab Series doesn’t call it fragrance free, and the list includes limonene, a fragrance component.

Classic aftershave feel, without alcohol

Skin Realist check: “Alcohol free” and “fragrance free” are separate claims. A balm can have one without the other, so read for both.

The bottom line

Skip the stinging splash and use a moisturizer on damp skin after every shave. If you only buy one product, make it COSRX Hydrium Green Tea Aqua Soothing Gel Cream: it’s cooling like an aftershave and sold as fragrance free. If your skin is dry or sensitive, the Perricone MD barrier moisturizer is the richer choice. And if scent is part of the ritual for you, Elemis Daily Moisture Boost is built for after shaving. For the full routine, see our men’s skincare basics or browse daily moisturizers.

Common questions

Do I need aftershave at all?

No. Rinsing, then applying a moisturizer while your skin is still damp, is enough for most men. Aftershave is optional, and if it burns or stings, the AAD says to stop using it.

Why does aftershave sting?

Many classic aftershaves contain alcohol and fragrance. Freshly shaved skin is easier to irritate, so those ingredients can sting. A product sold as fragrance free and without drying alcohol is less likely to.

Is aftershave balm the same as moisturizer?

Often, yes. Many balms are moisturizers marketed for after shaving. Check the ingredient list for fragrance and alcohol rather than relying on the name.

Is "unscented" the same as fragrance free?

No. The FDA notes that unscented products can contain fragrance ingredients used to mask other smells. Look for products sold as fragrance free and check the ingredient list.
