COSRX Retinol 0.5 Oil vs Retinol 0.1 Cream

Should I choose COSRX The Retinol 0.5 Oil or The Retinol 0.1 Cream?

Short answer

Choose The Retinol 0.1 Cream if you're new to retinol or have sensitive skin; it's the lowest strength in the range and comes in a moisturizing cream base. Choose The Retinol 0.5 Oil if you already tolerate retinol and want a higher strength in a short, 10-ingredient squalane oil. Both are sold as fragrance free.

What this means for you

Start with what you notice

Both are 20 mL COSRX retinol products for fine lines and texture. The main difference is strength: 0.1% in a cream or 0.5% in an oil.

The ingredient names, translated

Retinol is a vitamin A ingredient that can smooth fine lines and texture over months, but it can cause dryness, peeling and stinging, especially at higher strengths. The 0.1 Cream cushions it with glycerin, panthenol, shea butter and hyaluronic acid. The 0.5 Oil carries it in squalane and soybean oil with vitamin E.

How to decide

  • New to retinol? The Retinol 0.1 Cream.
  • Already use retinol without irritation? The Retinol 0.5 Oil.
  • Pregnant or trying? Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using either.

What to expect

Retinol usually takes three to six months to show a difference in fine lines. Expect some dryness or flaking in the first weeks. We haven't tested either product.

Higher-strength oil vs starter cream

COSRX The Retinol 0.5 Oil is a 20 mL face oil with 0.5% retinol. Squalane leads the list, followed by soybean oil, di-C12-13 alkyl malate and retinol, with tocotrienols and tocopherol.

COSRX The Retinol 0.1 Cream is a 20 mL cream with 0.1% retinol. It lists glycerin, trehalose, panthenol, shea butter, allantoin, adenosine and several forms of hyaluronic acid.

Skin Realist check: a higher number isn’t a better start. Most people get further with a strength they can use consistently.

If you’re pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using retinol. See our pregnancy skincare guide.

Label differences worth knowing

COSRX’s own product information notes the 0.5 Oil is higher strength than the 0.1 and 0.3 creams. See our guide to introducing retinol, our COSRX Retinol 0.1 vs 0.3 comparison and our moisturizer for retinol peeling guide.
