What it is

Squalane is an emollient used to soften skin and help reduce moisture loss. It is the stable, hydrogenated form of squalene, a lipid found naturally in skin and in some plant and animal sources. Cosmetic squalane is commonly derived from plant sources, though sourcing can vary by manufacturer. Check product information if source matters to you.

Squalane often appears in facial oils, moisturizers, and other products marketed for a smooth, lightweight feel. Despite being called an oil in some descriptions, its texture can feel less heavy than many traditional facial oils. The base formula and amount used still make a difference.

What it does

  • Softens the skin. Squalane is an emollient that helps leave skin feeling smooth and supple.
  • Helps reduce moisture loss. It can add an oil-like layer that slows water escaping from the skin’s surface.
  • Fits into many product types. It appears in standalone oils as well as creams and lotions, so you can choose the texture you prefer.

Who it suits

Squalane may suit dry or combination skin, or anyone who likes an emollient finish. Some people with oily skin also prefer it to heavier oils, but that is a personal texture preference, not a guarantee about how your skin will respond. If you tend to clog or dislike a slick finish, start with a small amount or look for a lighter moisturizer that includes squalane in a blend.

Squalane is generally considered a well-tolerated cosmetic ingredient. Still, reactions can happen, and the rest of the formula may include ingredients that do not suit you. Patch-test a new product if your skin is sensitive. You do not need to add a face oil if your current moisturizer already does the job; more layers are not automatically more effective.

What to pair it with, and what not to

Squalane can be applied after water-based products such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, then followed by other steps according to texture and directions. It can also be included in a moisturizer with ceramides. It is compatible with common actives such as retinol, though it cannot guarantee retinol will not irritate. Use only as much as feels comfortable, and apply sunscreen as directed during the day.

Skin Realist check: If a lighter moisturizer already works for you, you do not have to graduate to an oil just because it sounds luxurious.

Common questions

What does squalane do for skin?

Squalane is an emollient that helps soften skin and reduce moisture loss. It is used in facial oils, moisturizers, and other products, often for a lightweight, smooth feel.

Is squalane the same as squalene?

No. Squalene is an unsaturated oil naturally found in skin and some plant or animal sources. Squalane is its more stable, hydrogenated form commonly used in skincare.

Is squalane oil good for oily skin?

Squalane can feel lighter than many oils, so some people with oily or combination skin enjoy it. Preferences vary, and you can choose a light moisturizer instead if oils feel too rich.

Can you use squalane with retinol?

Yes. Squalane can be layered with retinol as part of a moisturizing routine. It does not prevent all irritation, so use retinol gradually and follow product directions.
