Why it is in the formula
Usually added in a small amount to thicken a water-based formula and help keep it uniform.

What it is

Manufactured by fermenting simple carbohydrate sugars with the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris, xanthan gum is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide thickener. Unlike gums tapped directly from tree trunks, this bio-fermented polymer provides reliable rheological stability, smooth glide, and uniform suspension to water-based serums and emulsions.

You will most often find it in water-based products such as gels, serums, lotions, cleansers, and masks. It is a helper ingredient, not the reason to buy a product. Its contribution may be subtle, but a formula’s texture affects how easily you dispense and spread it. The ingredient list does not tell you the exact amount or reveal how the rest of the formula is structured.

What it does

  • Thickens water. Xanthan gum increases viscosity, helping a thin liquid feel more like a gel or a pourable lotion.
  • Helps stabilize a formula. It can help keep dispersed ingredients from settling or separating, though it is only one part of the product’s stability system.
  • Changes the spread. In a small amount it can add body and slip, which can make a product easier to spread without running off your fingers.
  • Supports suspension. Thickening can help a formula keep particles or droplets distributed while it is stored and used.

Who it suits

Xanthan gum is not targeted to a skin type because its main job is formula texture. It can appear in gels and creams for many routines, and the finished product determines whether it feels light or tacky. It is a supporting ingredient rather than an active. If a product causes persistent discomfort, consider the full formula and stop using it.

What to pair it with, and what not to

There is nothing special to pair with xanthan gum. It is part of the product’s structure, so choose a moisturizer, cleanser, or serum based on the job you want it to do and on its texture. Glycerin and other humectants may be in the same water-based formula, but the formula as a whole determines how it feels. You do not need to add another thickener or an active to make xanthan gum work.

Skin Realist check: A product does not need to feel like pudding to be doing its job. Texture is a preference, not a skincare achievement.

Common questions

What does xanthan gum do in skincare?

Xanthan gum thickens water-based formulas and helps keep ingredients evenly dispersed. It can give gels and lotions a smoother, less runny texture.

Is xanthan gum natural?

It is made by fermenting sugars with a microorganism, then processing the resulting polysaccharide. The source sugars can vary, and the ingredient is still a manufactured cosmetic material.

Can xanthan gum irritate skin?

It is mainly a texture ingredient, not a fragrance or exfoliating active. Reactions to a finished product can happen, but the full formula matters more than the presence of one thickener.

Is xanthan gum good for sensitive skin?

Xanthan gum is commonly used to create a gel or lotion texture and is not included to create a strong skin sensation. If you have reactive skin, check the entire ingredient list and patch-test new products.
